Building a Prepared Community

On September 11, 2001, the nation and the world learned just how important it was to be prepared to handle a major disaster. As teams of emergency personnel struggled to assist the victims of the World Trade Center tragedy, and actually became victims themselves, everyday citizens stepped up to help.

tornado When the hours stretched into days and weeks, it was vitally important that the lines of communication remained open and a plan was in place to utilize the volunteers and resources, while protecting the volunteers.

Many disasters are not of this magnitude. However, events like the Oklahoma City bombing of the Murrah Building and the May 3, 1999, tornadoes that ripped through Oklahoma City and the surrounding communities, emphasize the importance of being prepared.

Tulsa has long been at the forefront in disaster preparedness, and has been nationally recognized for its progressive approach in this area.

Citizen Corps continues to build upon the goal of making sure the citizens and communities of Tulsa are ready to mobilize in a disaster situation.
