Community Emergency Response Team
Members of the Community Emergency Response Team take action following a major disaster to help others until professional
responders (police/fire/medical) can arrive on the scene. Depending on the nature
of the disaster, the number of victims, road blockages, and other problems, the response time
of Tulsa's first responders- firemen, police officers and ambulance- could be delayed by minutes or hours. In these
situations, members of the community must rely on each other for help in order to meet their immediate
life-saving and life-sustaining needs. Trained CERT volunteers can check their
own neighborhoods or workplaces to help assess damage and administer first aid to
injured victims.
In CERT, citizens learn about what they can expect following a major disaster in terms of services that may be available. CERT also makes citizens aware of how they can prepare for disaster and lessen the affects if a disaster occurs. Training includes needed life-saving skills with an emphasis on decision making skills, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number of people. Teams are organized so they are an extension of first responder services, offering immediate help to victims until the professional services arrive.
