What is Tulsa Citizen Corps?

The Tulsa Citizen Corps is a volunteer program established in March 2002 in response to President George W. Bush’s call for all Americans to become involved in their local community’s homeland security efforts. Nationally, Citizen Corps is overseen by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Domestic Preparedness.

CERT volunteers putting out fire in training exercise.Tulsa’s Citizen Corps effort is led by a Citizen Corps Council made up of representatives from public and private organizations that are committed to making Tulsa a disaster-resistant and prepared community. Tulsa was one of the first 50 cities in the nation to establish a Citizen Corps Council.

Under Mayor Taylor’s leadership, the Tulsa Citizen Corps coordinates volunteer activities to make Tulsa safer, stronger and better prepared to respond to a variety of emergencies, both natural and manmade. Through Citizen Corps, volunteers are not only preparing themselves and those around them for an emergency, they are also helping to build community, an essential component in making our city safer from hazards of all kinds.

Tulsa Citizen Corps volunteers are active in seven programs, all geared toward public health, public safety and disaster preparedness. Those programs are:
